Shopping in Bath England - find the best independent shops
The shopping in Bath England is famed throughout the UK for its variety and comprehensiveness, not to mention the outstanding beauty of its streets, passageways and markets.
Whilst all the major chain stores and ubiquitous mobile phone shops can be found here, just as they can in every other British town and city, you are also spoilt for choice for small, individual shops selling anything from pongy cheese to posh shoes, antiques to dolls house furniture, oriental rugs to stone flooring, mouth-watering chocolates to vinegars etc etc.
The owners of these independent shops take huge pride and pleasure in their trade and can give you the specialist advice to make a wise purchase.
People often complain they can no longer do everyday, ‘sensible’ shopping in the city of Bath, as rents and rates here are so high that this type of shop was driven out long ago. In fact, there are some great haberdashery and hardware shops right in the centre of Bath, if you know where to look - in the newly-refurbished Guildhall Market.
There are 29 stalls here where you can get essential supplies of things like fabric and thread, cleaning materials and pet supplies, not to mention treats like coffee beans, deli items, chocolates, jewellery and books. Entrances are on the High Street and Grand Parade opposite the weir.
As a general rule, the most upmarket shopping in Bath is at the top, or northern end of town, and the chain stores at the bottom by the bus and train stations.
Follow my Bath shopping tour to make sure you get to see most of the fascinating quality shops the city has to offer, set amongst some of the country's finest architecture.
The shopping tour and all of my pages on cafes, restaurants, shops, B&Bs etc follow the same route down from the higher end of town, via Milsom Street, Pulteney Bridge and down towards the Abbey.
